Audit a Capped Partner Rebate Formula from Chat to a Live Shared Workbook
Practise catching an uncapped 8% rebate bug, test MIN(Cap, Billings * Rate) with a changed cap in a live sheet, and understand how peer suggestions, in-app Pro credits, and the submitted ChatGPT connector differ.
Calculate the partner cap by hand before trusting any generated formula
Enter four quarterly partner billings in B2:B5: NorthStar (18,000), BluePeak (32,000), CedarLab (12,000), and ApexGrid (45,000), with Tier_Rate = 0.08 in F2 and Partner_Cap = 2,500 in F3. Compute the raw 8% rebates by hand first: 1,440, 2,560, 960, and 3,600 (total 8,560). Notice that BOTH BluePeak (2,560 > 2,500) and ApexGrid (3,600 > 2,500) exceed the 2,500 quarterly cap! Applying the cap per partner—not on the grand total—yields 1,440 + 2,500 + 960 + 2,500 = 7,400, preventing a 1,160 overpayment.
Try the common mistake =MIN(F3, SUM(B2:B5) * F2) in your head: capping the grand total collapses the entire payout to 2,500 instead of capping each partner row individually! Each partner row needs =MIN($F$3, ROUND(B2 * $F$2, 2)) in C2:C5 before summing SUM(C2:C5).
| Partner | Quarterly Billings | Uncapped 8% (D2:D5) | Capped MIN($F$3, B*$F$2) (C2:C5) |
|---|---|---|---|
| NorthStar | 18,000 | 1,440 | 1,440 |
| BluePeak | 32,000 | 2,560 (Exceeds cap by 60) | 2,500 (Capped) |
| CedarLab | 12,000 | 960 | 960 |
| ApexGrid | 45,000 | 3,600 (Exceeds cap by 1,100) | 2,500 (Total = 7,400 vs 8,560) |
Row-Level Capped Rebate & Overpayment Variance Formulas
Lock $F$2 (Rate) and $F$3 (Cap) with absolute references in C2:C5, sum C2:C5 for approved payout, and subtract from uncapped SUM(D2:D5) to verify the 1,160 cap savings.
=MIN($F$3, ROUND(B2 * $F$2, 2))Ask for a hint, review peer suggestions, and test a changed cap
With the in-app Pro assistant (which requires Pro and consumes Arte AI credits only when you send a prompt or start a bounded <= 3-minute voice session), ask: “Do not edit any cells yet. Give me one hint explaining why MIN(F3, SUM(B2:B5)*F2) and SUM of per-row MIN($F$3, B2*$F$2) disagree when two partners exceed 31,250.” After writing your own row formulas, invite a teammate in the Suggester role to review C2:C5: their cell comment explains the cap threshold (2,500 / 0.08 = 31,250), and you test changing F3 from 2,500 to 3,000—predicting 1,440 + 2,560 + 960 + 3,000 = 7,960—before accepting any proposed edit.
How does starting in ChatGPT compare? The Arte Sheets ChatGPT plugin (version 0.1.0) has been submitted to OpenAI and is currently In review / Not published, so public installation is not yet available. Where a connected account uses the MCP connector on a cloud workbook enabled for collaboration (manageable under Profile -> Connected apps), read_range (<= 200 cells) inspects raw formulas and revision without recalculating values, apply_changes (<= 100 cells, requiring Pro and editor/owner role) flags concurrent edits as pendingReview rather than overwriting peers, share_workbook creates an in-app invitation (emailSent=false, separate from owner-only public read-only links), and ordinary MCP tool calls do not spend Arte AI inference credits (nor do ChatGPT plan credits transfer to Arte Sheets). Always open the live workbook to verify recalculated totals and changed inputs yourself.
