Peer review a spreadsheet answer: value, formula and explanation
Use a two-person practice exercise to distinguish a correct number from a reusable formula. Discuss a cell, propose a correction and verify it before acceptance.
Agree on the exercise
A workshop buys 4 notebooks at 6 units each and 3 pens at 2 each. Put quantities in B2:B3 and unit prices in C2:C3. The total should be 30. One learner builds the calculation; the other explains what would happen if the order changed.
Test the method, not just the answer
A typed 30 and =B2*C2+B3*C3 initially look equivalent. Change the notebook quantity to 5: the formula should return 36. A typed total stays at 30. Restore 4 before discussing the original solution.
Give the reviewer a bounded role
Save the exercise to your account and share the document with the reviewer using a suggestion role when appropriate. Use a cell comment to ask why the notebook quantity affects the total. Suggestions and comments serve different purposes: one proposes a value or formula, the other records the reasoning.
Review a proposal with a test
The reviewer can propose the formula in the total cell. Before accepting it, inspect its references and calculate 4×6+3×2 independently. After acceptance, repeat the quantity-change test and restore the example. Do not assume every participant can accept suggestions; document permissions apply.
Use AI as a discussion aid
With Pro, ask: “Explain why a typed total and a formula can agree today but diverge after an input changes. Ask me one question without editing the sheet.” Compare its explanation with the test you performed. This is peer feedback, not an automatic grade or verified certificate.
