ASME B30.9 Overhead Crane Rigging, Wire-Rope/Chain Bridle Slings & Spreader Beams
Two-Leg Bridle Sling Angle Tension & WLL Formula
Calculate Per-Leg Sling Angle Multiplier 1/(2*SIN(theta)), Actual Tension Per Sling Leg (t), Inward Horizontal Crushing Force on Load (t), and Derated Hitch Working Load Limit (t).
Rigging a two-leg bridle sling at a flat 30° horizontal angle puts the ENTIRE 100% payload tension into EACH leg—overloading slings!
Riggers ALWAYS measure ASME B30.9 Sling Angle `theta` from the **HORIZONTAL** load plane (`theta = 90°` vertical basket legs; `theta = 60°` standard equilateral triangle; `theta = 30°` danger boundary below which ASME B30.9 prohibits unengineered bridle picks!). Splitting vertical weight `W` (metric tons) equally between two symmetric legs requires `2 * T_leg * SIN(theta_rad) = W`, so Each Leg Carries Tension `T_leg = W / (2 * SIN(theta_rad))` (Per-Leg Load Multiplier `M_leg = 1 / (2 * SIN(theta_rad))`: `0.500` vertical, `0.5774` at `60°`, `0.7071` at `45°`, and `1.0000` at `30°`—where EACH wire rope feels the FULL `100%` load weight `W`!). Simultaneously, inward horizontal vector components `F_horiz = T_leg * COS(theta_rad) = (W / 2) / TAN(theta_rad)` pinch fragile thin-walled vessels inward unless a rigid Spreader Beam converts the pick back to `90°` vertical legs!
Verify on a 12.0-Ton Heat-Exchanger Overhead Crane Pick—Lifted_Payload `W` = 12.00 t (B2), Sling_Angle_From_Horizontal `theta` = 60.0° (B3 -> Per-Leg Multiplier = `0.5774` in E2), and Single-Leg_Vertical_WLL = 8.00 t (B4): Tension in Each Leg equals `6.93` t (E3), Inward Horizontal Compression on Lifting Lugs equals `3.46` t (E4), and Derated Two-Leg Bridle WLL (`2 * WLL_1 * SIN(60°)`) equals `13.86` t (`>= 12.00` t safe pick!, E5)!
| ASME B30.9 Bridle Sling KPI (Load W=12.0 t, Angle=60° vs 30°, Single-Leg WLL=8.0 t) | Formula | Verified Output |
|---|---|---|
| Per-Leg Tension Multiplier | 1 / (2 * SIN(Angle_deg * PI()/180)) | 0.5774 (1.0000 @ flat 30° angle!) |
| Actual Tension Per Sling Leg (t) | Payload_t / (2 * SIN(Angle_rad)) | 6.93 t (12.00 t > 8t WLL @ 30°!) |
| Inward Horizontal Pinch Force (t) | (Payload_t / 2) / TAN(Angle_rad) | 3.46 t (10.39 t buckling @ 30°!) |
| Derated Two-Leg Hitch WLL (t) | 2 * Single_Leg_WLL_t * SIN(Angle_rad) | 13.86 t (8.00 t < 12t OVERLOAD @ 30°!) |
ASME B30.9 Horizontal Sling-Angle Trigonometry & Derated Bridle WLL Formula
Validate `Payload > 0` t, ASME B30.9 Horizontal `Sling_Angle theta` in `[30°, 90°]` (flagging `< 30°` low-headroom picks to mandate a spreader bar!), and `Single_Leg_Vertical_WLL > 0` t!

Shorten the sling headroom so Horizontal Angle `B3` flattens from `60.0°` down to `30.0°`: Per-Leg Multiplier E2 hits `1.0000`, Tension in EACH leg E3 jumps to the full `12.00` t (exceeding the `8.00` t single-leg WLL!), Inward Crushing Compression E4 triples to `10.39` t, and Bridle Hitch WLL E5 drops to `8.00` t!
