OSHA 1910.178 Powered Industrial Trucks, Forklift Attachment Derating & Warehouse Safety
Forklift Load-Center Moment & Attachment Derating Formula
Calculate Rated Safe Overturning Moment About Front Drive Axle (kN·m), Extended Net Moment Arm (mm), Derated Safe Lifting Capacity (kg), and Retained Nameplate Capacity (%).
A "2,500 kg" forklift CANNOT lift 2,500 kg on long pallets or a sideshift/clamp attachment—front-axle tipping moment derates capacity 30%!
Counterbalance lift trucks pivot like a first-class seesaw over the center of the Front Drive-Axle Wheels (the tipping fulcrum), NOT the vertical face of the forks! A truck’s OSHA 1910.178 / ISO 3691 Nameplate Rating `W_rated` (e.g. `2,500` kg) holds ONLY at Standard Load Center `LC_rated` (`500` mm or `24"` from fork vertical face) with bare standard forks sitting at Front-Axle-to-Fork-Face Offset `x_0` (mm), defining Maximum Safe Front-Axle Moment `M_safe = W_rated * g * (x_0 + LC_rated) / 1,000,000` (kN·m)! Adding a hydraulic paper-roll clamp or sideshift carriage of mass `W_att` (kg) and Lost-Load Thickness `Delta_x_att` (mm) BOTH consumes overturning moment `M_att = W_att * g * (x_0 + Delta_x_att / 2) / 1e6` AND pushes a long pallet’s Actual Load Center `LC_actual` further forward to Total Lever Arm `L_net = x_0 + Delta_x_att + LC_actual` (mm)—slashing Safe Derated Payload to `W_derated = ((M_safe - M_att) * 1e6) / (g * L_net)` kg!
Verify on a 2,500 kg Forklift Fitted with a Heavy Sideshift/Fork-Positioner Lifting a 1,500 mm Long Crate—Nameplate_Capacity `W_r` = 2,500.0 kg (B2), Rated_Load_Center `LC_r` = 500.0 mm (B3), Drive_Axle_to_Fork_Face `x_0` = 460.0 mm (B4 -> Safe Moment = `23.54` kN·m in E2), Crate_Load_Center `LC_act` = 750.0 mm (B5), Attachment_Lost_Load `Delta_x` = 110.0 mm (B6 -> Net Lever Arm = `1,320.0` mm in E3), and Attachment_Mass `W_att` = 180.0 kg (B7): Safe Derated Capacity drops to `1,748.0` kg (E4 = `69.92%` of nameplate in E5)!
| OSHA 1910.178 Forklift Derating KPI (2,500 kg @ 500 mm, x0=460, LC=750, 180 kg Attach) | Formula | Verified Output |
|---|---|---|
| Safe Front-Axle Moment (kN·m) | (W_rated * 9.80665 * (x0 + LC_rated)) / 1e6 | 23.54 kN·m |
| Extended Payload Lever Arm (mm) | x0_mm + Attach_Lost_Load_mm + Actual_LC_mm | 1,320.0 mm (960.0 mm @ bare 500 mm pallet) |
| Derated Safe Payload (kg) | ((M_safe - M_attach)*1e6) / (9.80665*Arm) | 1,748.0 kg (2,500.0 kg @ bare standard) |
| Retained Nameplate Capacity (%) | (Derated_Payload_kg / Rated_Cap_kg) * 100 | 69.92% (100.00% @ bare standard) |

Remove the attachment (`B6 = 0, B7 = 0`) and pick a standard `500` mm center pallet (`B5 = 500`): Net Lever Arm E3 returns to `960.0` mm (`460 + 500`), Derated Capacity E4 recovers to the exact `2,500.0` kg nameplate, and Retained Capacity E5 hits `100.00%`!
