Tail-at-Scale Fan-Out Latency & Hedged Request Formula
Calculate Jeffrey Dean & Luiz André Barroso’s (2013) microservice fan-out tail probability 1 - (1 - p)^K and prove how r-way hedged requests collapse p99 amplification to 1 - (1 - p^r)^K.
Why 99%-fast leaf microservices still make 40–63% of parent fan-out requests slow!
In Jeffrey Dean and Luiz André Barroso’s classic paper "The Tail at Scale" (2013), a root search, feed, or checkout gateway fans out in parallel across K leaf shards and cannot finish until the SLOWEST shard responds! Even if each leaf shard breaches its latency target with tiny probability p = 0.01 (99th percentile p99), independent Parent Tail Breach Probability explodes to P_parent = 1 - ((1 - p)^K)! Issuing r-way Hedged Requests (sending a backup read to an independent replica if the primary crosses p95/p99 so a shard is slow ONLY if all r replicas are slow simultaneously, probability p^r) collapses parent tail probability down to P_hedged = 1 - ((1 - (p^r))^K)!
Check by hand with FanOut_Shards_K = 50 (B2), Leaf_Tail_Prob_p = 0.01 (B3 = 1.0% p99), and Hedge_Replicas_r = 2 (B4): Unhedged Parent Tail Probability is 1 - 0.99^50 = 0.3950 (39.50% of user page loads suffer p99 tail latency — and 63.40% at K = 100 shards!). Enabling 2-way hedged reads cuts shard failure to 0.01^2 = 0.0001 and slashes Parent Tail Probability 79x from 39.50% down to 1 - 0.9999^50 = 0.0050 (0.50%)!

Unhedged Parallel Fan-Out Tail Breach Probability Formula
Validate integer shard count K >= 1 and leaf tail probability 0 <= p <= 1.
=LET(k_sh, B2, p_tl, B3, IF(OR(k_sh < 1, INT(k_sh) <> k_sh, p_tl < 0, p_tl > 1), "Invalid Fan-Out Input", ROUND(1 - ((1 - p_tl)^k_sh), 4)))r-Way Hedged Fan-Out Tail Breach Probability Formula
Notice that hedging ONLY after a shard exceeds its 95th percentile adds <= 5% extra backend load while capturing nearly the full 1 - (1 - p^2)^K tail reduction!
