Gunther Universal Scalability Law (USL) Peak Formula
Calculate cluster relative capacity C(N) = N / (1 + alpha*(N - 1) + beta*N*(N - 1)) and exact retrograde concurrency peak N_peak* = SQRT((1 - alpha)/beta) under Neil Gunther’s USL.
Why database and consensus clusters get SLOWER past N_peak* when cache/lock crosstalk beta > 0!
Amdahl’s Law models only serial queueing contention alpha in [0, 1) (predicting throughput monotonically approaches ceiling 1 / alpha). Real distributed databases, Raft/Paxos clusters, and multi-socket locks ALSO incur pairwise point-to-point coherency crosstalk beta * N * (N - 1)! Neil Gunther’s (1993) Universal Scalability Law unifies both effects: Relative Capacity C(N) = N / (1 + alpha * (N - 1) + beta * N * (N - 1))! Whenever beta > 0, differentiating C(N) with respect to N reveals a hard Retrograde Scalability Peak at N_peak* = FLOOR(SQRT((1 - alpha) / beta), 1) — adding worker nodes beyond N_peak* ACTUALLY REDUCES total cluster throughput!
Verify on Serial_Contention_alpha = 0.04 (B2), Coherency_Crosstalk_beta = 0.0024 (B3), and Active_Nodes_N = 20 (B4): Optimal Concurrency Peak is N_peak* = SQRT((1 - 0.04) / 0.0024) = SQRT(400) = 20 nodes EXACT, where relative speedup peaks at C(20) = 20 / (1 + 0.76 + 0.912) = 7.4850x! Now test over-scaling to N = 40 nodes: crosstalk explodes to 0.0024 * 40 * 39 = 3.744, dragging total cluster capacity DOWN to C(40) = 40 / 6.304 = 6.3452x (-15.23% slower with 2x the cloud bill!)!
| USL Cluster Metric (alpha = 0.04, beta = 0.0024) | Formula | Verified Output |
|---|---|---|
| Optimal Node Count (N_peak*) | FLOOR(SQRT((1 - alpha) / beta), 1) | 20 nodes |
| Peak Relative Capacity C(20) | 20 / (1 + 0.04*19 + 0.0024*20*19) | 7.4850x Single-Node |
| Over-Scaled Retrograde Capacity C(40) | 40 / (1 + 0.04*39 + 0.0024*40*39) | 6.3452x (-15.23% Thrashing!) |
| Pure Amdahl Benchmark (beta = 0, N = 20) | 20 / (1 + 0.04*19) | 11.3636x (Asymptote 25.0x) |
