Data Center PUE, DCiE, CUE & WUE Efficiency Formula
Audit ISO/IEC 30134-2 Power Usage Effectiveness PUE = Total_Facility_Energy / IT_Energy, DCiE = 1 / PUE, Carbon Usage Effectiveness CUE, and Water Usage Effectiveness WUE.
Catch the adiabatic cooling trade-off: lowering PUE can silently spike WUE evaporative water burn!
Standardized by The Green Grid and ISO/IEC 30134, four ratios govern hyperscale and colocation data-center efficiency relative to IT Equipment Energy E_IT (MWh measured at PDU output to servers/storage/switches)! First, Power Usage Effectiveness PUE = E_Total_Facility / E_IT >= 1.00 (where E_Total = E_IT + E_Cooling + E_UPS_Loss + E_Lighting; ideal theoretical limit = 1.00) and reciprocal Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency DCiE = E_IT / E_Total_Facility = 1 / PUE! Second, because evaporative cooling towers cut chiller kWh (lowering PUE) by evaporating millions of liters of potable water, operators must jointly audit Water Usage Effectiveness WUE = Annual_Site_Water_Liters / E_IT_kWh (L/kWh) AND Carbon Usage Effectiveness CUE = Total_CO2e_kg / E_IT_kWh (= PUE * Grid_Carbon_Intensity_kg_per_kWh)!
Verify on Annual_IT_Energy E_IT = 40,000 MWh (B2 = 40,000,000 kWh), Cooling_And_Facility_Overhead E_NonIT = 10,000 MWh (B3 -> Total Facility = 50,000 MWh), Grid_Carbon_Factor EF_grid = 0.36 kg CO2e/kWh (B4), and Annual_Cooling_Water = 18,000,000 Liters (B5): PUE is (40,000 + 10,000) / 40,000 = 1.2500; DCiE is 1 / 1.25 = 0.8000 (80.0% of utility power reaches IT!); CUE is 1.2500 * 0.36 = 0.4500 kg CO2e per IT kWh; and WUE is 18,000,000 / (40,000 * 1,000) = 0.4500 L/kWh!
| ISO 30134 Data Center KPI (IT=40k MWh, Overhead=10k MWh) | Formula | Verified Output |
|---|---|---|
| Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) | (E_IT + E_NonIT) / E_IT | 1.2500 (>= 1.00 Physical Floor) |
| Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE) | E_IT / (E_IT + E_NonIT) | 0.8000 (80.0% to IT Gear) |
| Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE) | PUE * Grid_EF_kg_kWh | 0.4500 kg CO2e / IT kWh |
| Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) | Water_Liters / (E_IT_MWh * 1,000) | 0.4500 Liters / IT kWh |
ISO/IEC 30134-2 Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) Formula
Any reported PUE < 1.00 signals a metering defect (e.g., excluding chiller plant or substation transformer losses, or double-counting on-site solar without adding generation to E_Total)!
=IF(OR(B2 <= 0, B3 < 0), "Invalid Energy Metering (Require IT > 0, Overhead >= 0)", ROUND((B2 + B3) / B2, 4))Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE) & Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) Formula
Convert E_IT from MWh to kWh (* 1000) so WUE reports standard Green Grid units of Liters per IT kWh!
