Kaya Identity Emissions & Decarbonization Rate Formula
Compute total CO2 via Yoichi Kaya’s (1990) 4-factor identity Pop * (GDP/Pop) * (E/GDP) * (CO2/E) and solve the required carbon-intensity decline rate to meet net-zero pathways.
Decompose corporate or national emissions into Population, Affluence, Energy Intensity, and Carbon Intensity!
Formulated by Yoichi Kaya (1990) and adopted across IPCC climate scenarios, the Kaya Identity factors annual CO2 emissions F_CO2 into four observable drivers: F_CO2 = P * (GDP / P) * (E / GDP) * (CO2 / E), where P is Population, (GDP / P) is per-capita Affluence, (E / GDP) is Energy Intensity of GDP, and (CO2 / E) is Carbon Intensity of Primary Energy! Taking continuous growth rates turns multiplication into an exact additive budget: g_F = g_P + g_Y + g_E + g_C! Consequently, hitting an annual emissions reduction target g_F_target (such as -4.0%/yr) while population and living standards grow requires Carbon Intensity of Energy to fall at rate g_C_req = g_F_target - (g_P + g_Y + g_E)!
Verify by hand on Population_P = 8.0 billion (B2), Affluence_y = 15.0 kUSD/person (B3 -> World GDP = 120 T$), Energy_Intensity_e = 5.0 MJ/$ (B4 -> Primary Energy = 600 EJ), and Carbon_Intensity_c = 0.06 kgCO2/MJ (B5): Baseline Emissions equal 8 * 15 * 5 * 0.06 = 36.00 GtCO2! With g_P = +0.8%/yr (B6 = 0.008), g_Y = +2.2%/yr (B7 = 0.022), efficiency trend g_E = -1.5%/yr (B8 = -0.015), current grid decarbonization g_C = -1.0%/yr (B9 = -0.010), and Net-Zero Pathway Target g_F_target = -4.0%/yr (B10 = -0.040): current trajectory still GROWS at +0.0050 (+0.50%/yr!), requiring grid carbon intensity to decline at g_C_req = -0.040 - 0.015 = -0.0550 (-5.50%/yr — 5.5x faster!)!

| Current Trajectory Emissions Growth (g_F) | g_P + g_Y + g_E + g_C | +0.0050 (+0.50% / yr Rising!) |
| Required Grid Decarbonization Rate (g_C_req) | g_F_target - (g_P + g_Y + g_E) | -0.0550 (-5.50% / yr Needed) |
