Unruh Effect Temperature (TU) & Rindler Horizon Distance Formula
Calculate the Fulling-Davies-Unruh quantum vacuum thermal temperature T_U = (hbar * a) / (2 * PI() * c * k_B) (Kelvin) and Rindler causal horizon distance d_R = c^2 / a for ultrahigh laser-plasma accelerations.
Why reaching 1 Kelvin of Unruh vacuum glow demands 2.47 x 10^20 m/s^2 of proper acceleration!
William Unruh (1976), Stephen Fulling, and Paul Davies proved a foundational equivalence-principle twin to Stephen Hawking’s black-hole radiation: whereas an inertial observer sees empty Minkowski quantum vacuum at 0 K, a detector undergoing uniform proper acceleration a (m/s^2) perceives a warm Planckian thermal bath at the Unruh Temperature T_U = (hbar * a) / (2 * PI() * c * k_B) = a / (2.47108e20) Kelvin, bounded by a Rindler causal horizon at distance d_R = c^2 / a behind the observer!
Notice the staggering physical scale: Earth’s surface gravity (a = 9.81 m/s^2) produces T_U ~ 4e-20 K, completely unobservable—until petawatt laser-wakefield electron accelerators reach proper accelerations around a = 5.0 x 10^20 m/s^2 (T_U = 2.0234 K, Rindler horizon d_R = 179.75 mm) and 25.0 x 10^20 m/s^2 (T_U = 10.117 K, d_R = 35.95 mm)!
| Proper Acceleration a (in units of 10^20 m/s^2) | Unruh Temperature TU (K) | Rindler Horizon Distance dR = c^2 / a (mm) | Physical Regime |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.4711 x 10^20 m/s^2 (1-Kelvin Benchmark) | 1.0000 K | 363.71 mm | Cryogenic Thermal Benchmark |
| 5.00 x 10^20 m/s^2 (Laser-Plasma Electron) | 2.0234 K | 179.75 mm | Near CMB 2.725 K Background |
| 25.00 x 10^20 m/s^2 (Petawatt Wakefield) | 10.1170 K | 35.95 mm | Macroscopic Sub-Decimeter Horizon |
Unruh Thermal Bath Temperature T_U (K) = a_10e20 / 2.47108
Expressing proper acceleration B2 in units of 10^20 m/s^2 divides cleanly by (2 * pi * c * k_B / hbar) * 10^-20 = 2.47108.

Since c^2 = 8.98755e16 m^2/s^2 = 8.98755e19 mm*m/s^2, d_R (mm) = 898.755 / a_10e20!
