UNDP Geometric Human Development Index (HDI) Formula
Compute the post-2010 UNDP Human Development Index HDI = (I_Health * I_Education * I_Income)^(1/3), log-income index normalization, and uneven-development penalty vs the legacy arithmetic mean.
Why UNDP replaced the arithmetic mean with the geometric cube root in 2010!
From 1990 through 2009, the United Nations Development Programme computed HDI as the simple arithmetic average (I_Health + I_Education + I_Income) / 3 — implicitly assuming perfect linear substitutability where high oil income could offset low literacy or life expectancy dollar-for-dollar! Inspired by Amartya Sen’s capability framework, the 2010 reform switched to the Geometric Mean HDI = (I_Health * I_Education * I_Income)^(1/3) (where Income Index normalizes PPP Gross National Income per capita via diminishing marginal utility of money: I_Income = (LN(GNI) - LN(100)) / (LN(75000) - LN(100)))! By AM-GM inequality, Geometric HDI <= Arithmetic Mean, penalizing unbalanced development whenever any capability dimension lags behind!
Verify on an exact cubic triple: Health_Index I_H = 0.80 (B2), Education_Index I_E = 0.60 (B3), Income_Index I_Y = 0.45 (B4), and PPP_GNI_Per_Capita = 20,000 (B5): Product 0.80 * 0.60 * 0.45 = 0.216, whose exact cube root is Geometric HDI = 0.6000! By contrast, the legacy pre-2010 Arithmetic Mean reports (0.80 + 0.60 + 0.45) / 3 = 0.6167 — an Unevenness Penalty of -0.0167 (-1.67 index points), whereas a balanced economy [0.60, 0.60, 0.60] incurs 0.0000 penalty! Separately, GNI = 20,000 maps to Log-Income Index (LN(20000) - LN(100)) / (LN(75000) - LN(100)) = 0.8003!
| UNDP HDI Metric (I_H=0.80, I_E=0.60, I_Y=0.45, GNI=20,000) | Formula | Verified Output |
|---|---|---|
| Post-2010 Geometric Mean HDI | (I_H * I_E * I_Y)^(1 / 3) | 0.6000 (0.216^(1/3)) |
| Legacy Pre-2010 Arithmetic HDI | AVERAGE(B2:B4) | 0.6167 |
| AM-GM Imbalance Penalty | Geometric_HDI - Arithmetic_HDI | -0.0167 (-1.67 pts) |
| UNDP Log-Income Dimension Index | (LN(GNI) - LN(100)) / (LN(75000) - LN(100)) | 0.8003 |
Post-2010 UNDP Geometric-Mean HDI Formula
Validate all three dimension indices in (0, 1] — notice under the geometric mean, if ANY dimension approaches 0, total HDI collapses to 0!
