Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect: Cluster Compton-y & CMB Temperature Decrement
Calculate the redshift-independent galaxy-cluster Compton-y parameter y = 0.0040171 * n_e * T_keV * L_Mpc and Rayleigh-Jeans CMB brightness shadow ΔT_RJ = -2 * y * T_CMB (μK).
Why galaxy clusters cast cold shadows on the Cosmic Microwave Background—at ANY redshift!
Rashid Sunyaev and Yakov Zel’dovich (1970, 1972) predicted that when 2.7255 K Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photons pass through the 10^8 K X-ray plasma of a massive galaxy cluster, inverse Compton scattering boosts low-frequency CMB photons to higher energies—carving a cold radio shadow ΔT_RJ = -2 * y * T_CMB below 217 GHz whose amplitude is completely independent of cluster distance or redshift!
The integrated line-of-sight thermal pressure is measured by the dimensionless Compton-y parameter y = (σ_T / (m_e c^2)) * n_e * (k_B T_e) * L. Expressing electron density n_e in cm^-3, X-ray temperature k_B T_e in keV (against m_e c^2 = 511.0 keV), and path length L in megaparsecs (σ_T * 1 Mpc = 2.052735 cm^3) gives y = 0.0040171 * n_e * T_keV * L_Mpc! Across a rich Coma/Bullet-scale cluster (n_e = 0.003 cm^-3, k_B T_e = 8.5 keV, L = 2.0 Mpc), Compton y = 2.049 × 10^-4 and the Rayleigh-Jeans CMB shadow plunges ΔT_RJ = -1,116.8 μK (-1.12 mK)!
| Intracluster Plasma Sightline | Compton-y (× 10^-4) | Rayleigh-Jeans Shadow ΔT_RJ (μK) | Millimeter Survey Detectability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rich Massive Cluster (ne=0.003, T=8.5 keV, L=2.0 Mpc) | 2.049 | -1,116.8 μK | High-SNR SPT / ACT / Planck Detection |
| Poor Galaxy Group (ne=0.001, T=2.5 keV, L=1.0 Mpc) | 0.100 | -54.7 μK | Stacking / Deep Arcminute Survey |
| Unphysical Input (ne <= 0 or T <= 0) | Domain Guard | "Invalid Cluster Inputs" | Requires Positive Plasma Parameters |
Scaled Galaxy-Cluster Compton-y Parameter (× 10^-4)
Evaluates 10,000 * 0.0040171 * n_e * T_keV * L_Mpc so typical 10^-5–10^-4 cluster sightlines read cleanly.

Computes -2 * y * T_CMB * 10^6 in microkelvins (negative sign denotes a cold CMB shadow below 217 GHz).
