Solar PV NOCT Thermal Derating & IEC PR Formula
Calculate operating silicon cell temperature T_cell = T_amb + ((NOCT - 20) / 800) * G, thermal-derated DC array output, and IEC 61724 plant Performance Ratio PR.
Why desert summer heat cuts solar PV megawatts even under 1,000 W/m^2 clear-sky irradiance!
Solar PV nameplate ratings P_STC (kWp) are flashed indoors at Standard Test Conditions (Irradiance G_STC = 1,000 W/m^2, Cell Temperature T_STC = 25 deg C). Out in the field under Plane-of-Array Irradiance G (W/m^2) and Ambient Air Temperature T_amb (deg C), modules heat up well above air temperature according to Nominal Operating Cell Temperature (NOCT, measured at 800 W/m^2 and 20 deg C air): Operating Cell Temperature is T_cell = T_amb + ((NOCT - 20) / 800) * G! Because crystalline silicon voltage drops with heat at Temperature Coefficient gamma_P < 0 (typically -0.0035 to -0.0040 / deg C, i.e., -0.35% to -0.40% per deg C above 25 C), Thermal-Derated DC Power is P_DC = P_STC * (G / 1000) * (1 + gamma_P * (T_cell - 25))! Across any billing period with POA Insolation H_POA (kWh/m^2) and Metered AC Export E_AC (kWh), IEC 61724 Plant Performance Ratio is PR = E_AC / (P_STC * H_POA)!
Verify on exact numbers: Nameplate_Array P_STC = 1,000 kWp (B2), Irradiance G = 1,000 W/m^2 (B3), Ambient_Temp T_amb = 35.0 deg C (B4), Module_NOCT = 44.0 deg C (B5), Power_Temp_Coeff gamma_P = -0.0040 /C (-0.40%/C, B6), Daily_POA_Insolation H_POA = 6.00 kWh/m^2 (B7), and Metered_Daily_AC E_AC = 4,860 kWh (B8): Cell Temperature reaches T_cell = 35 + ((44 - 20) / 800) * 1,000 = 35 + 30 = 65.00 deg C (40 C hotter than STC!); Thermal-Derated Instantaneous DC Power drops to 1,000 * 1.0 * (1 - 0.0040 * 40) = 840.00 kW (-16.0% heat loss!); and IEC 61724 Daily Performance Ratio is 4,860 / (1,000 * 6.00) = 0.8100 (81.00% overall plant PR after heat, soiling, wiring, and inverter losses)!

Cold snowy alpine mornings (T_cell < 25 C) boost voltage so instantaneous PR can legitimately exceed 0.90–1.00, while annual utility-scale PR typically spans 0.78–0.86.
