Solar PV Cell Fill Factor (FF) & Power Conversion Efficiency (PCE)

Use measured maximum-power voltage and current to calculate PV output watts, fill factor and conversion efficiency, with consistent irradiance, area and measurement conditions.

An illustrative measured-point calculation

The inputs describe an illustrative cell, not a certified commercial wafer. Vmp and Imp must be the voltage and current at the same measured maximum-power point. Their product is Pmax. This worksheet does not scan an IV curve or find its maximum automatically.

Fill factor is Pmax/(Voc*Isc). Conversion efficiency is Pmax/(G*A), with irradiance G in W/m² and cell area A in m². Keep voltage in volts and current in amperes. Report area consistently: active-area, aperture-area and total-area efficiencies are different conventions.

All measurements must refer to the same device and conditions. Irradiance of 1000 W/m² alone does not establish standard test conditions: the reference spectrum and cell temperature also matter (AM1.5G and 25°C for the conventional terrestrial reference). These inputs do not establish an STC certification.

The example gives 7.488 W, fill factor about 80.39% and efficiency about 22.69%. Changing Vmp alone is an arithmetic sensitivity exercise; it does not diagnose series resistance. A complete IV measurement and other evidence are needed to explain performance differences.

This calculation gives point-condition DC cell efficiency, not annual energy yield, inverter efficiency or a prediction of how IV parameters change with irradiance.

Maximum power in watts, D2

Inputs B2:B5 are Voc, Isc, Vmp and Imp. Numeric positive IV limits and nonnegative operating-point coordinates are required. Coordinates above those limits are flagged. A zero operating-point product returns zero as a diagnostic case; it does not prove that this is the actual maximum of a healthy illuminated cell.

=IF(COUNT(B2:B5)<>4,"Enter numeric IV parameters",IF(OR(B2<=0,B3<=0,B4<0,B5<0),"Require positive Voc/Isc and nonnegative Vmp/Imp",IF(OR(B4>B2,B5>B3),"MPP exceeds IV limits",B4*B5)))

Fill factor in D3

Uses unrounded D2. Format the result as a percentage for display; do not multiply by 100 and also apply percentage formatting.

=IF(ISNUMBER(D2),D2/(B2*B3),D2)

Conversion efficiency in D4

B6 is irradiance and B7 is the stated area. Both must be positive individually, so two negative values cannot pass validation. Output above the incident power is flagged as inconsistent input rather than clamped. Rounding is only for display.

=IF(NOT(ISNUMBER(D2)),D2,IF(COUNT(B6:B7)<>2,"Enter numeric irradiance and area",IF(MIN(B6:B7)<=0,"Irradiance and area must be positive",IF(D2>B6*B7,"Output exceeds incident power: check measurements",D2/(B6*B7)))))
