Database & Dynamic Filtering
Replace DAVERAGE, DMAX, DMIN, and DSTDEV Criteria Ranges With Dynamic FILTER Formulas
Eliminate fragile multi-row database criteria blocks by pairing FILTER, AVERAGEIFS, MAXIFS, MINIFS, and STDEV_S with direct cell-referenced criteria.
Why legacy D-functions break in multi-row summary tables
Classic database functions (DAVERAGE, DMAX, DMIN, DCOUNT, DGET, DSTDEV, DVAR) require a dedicated two-row criteria range whose header text matches the table's column names character-for-character. Because each criteria block represents a single query, building a 10-row regional summary table with DAVERAGE forces you to maintain 10 separate criteria boxes.
Modern spreadsheet formulas replace every D-function inline: AVERAGEIFS, MAXIFS, MINIFS, and COUNTIFS handle multi-column AND criteria natively, while wrapping FILTER(values, mask) inside STDEV_S, VAR_S, or PRODUCT reproduces DSTDEV, DVAR, and DPRODUCT cleanly. In Arte Sheets, when you attach a CSV or XLSX export to the AI Assistant, it inspects tabular headers and row excerpts so you can request auditable FILTER/AVERAGEIFS summary formulas and review cell proposals before applying them.
| Legacy Database Function | Modern Inline Replacement | EU + Prod Result |
|---|---|---|
| DAVERAGE(db, "Duration_Sec", crit) | =AVERAGEIFS(C2:C7, A2:A7, F2, B2:B7, G2) | 160 |
| DMAX(db, "Duration_Sec", crit) | =MAXIFS(C2:C7, A2:A7, F2, B2:B7, G2) | 210 |
| DMIN(db, "Duration_Sec", crit) | =MINIFS(C2:C7, A2:A7, F2, B2:B7, G2) | 120 |
| DSTDEV(db, "Duration_Sec", crit) | =ROUND(STDEV_S(FILTER(C2:C7, D2:D7)), 4) | 45.8258 |
| DVAR(db, "Duration_Sec", crit) | =VAR_S(FILTER(C2:C7, D2:D7)) | 2100 |
Inline Conditional Mean & Dispersion (DAVERAGE & DSTDEV Replacements)
Filters Duration_Sec (C2:C7) by the row-level criteria mask in D2:D7 and computes exact sample standard deviation.
=ROUND(STDEV_S(FILTER(C2:C7, D2:D7)), 4)Multi-Criteria Conditional Mean, Minimum, and Maximum
Computes the conditional mean directly from Region (F2) and Tier (G2) without any auxiliary criteria header range.
=AVERAGEIFS(C2:C7, A2:A7, F2, B2:B7, G2)Try the example
