Frequency distribution table: Bin Count, Relative %, and Cumulative %

Group numeric scores into custom bins with COUNTIFS and calculate Relative Frequency % and Cumulative Frequency % without legacy array entry.

Count explicit inclusive frequency bins

COUNTIFS with explicit lower and upper bounds makes the bin convention visible. FREQUENCY is another option, with upper cutoffs and an additional overflow bin.

Relative frequency divides each count by the total eligible count; cumulative frequency sums counts up to the current bin. Reconcile coverage before interpreting percentages.

Bin Min (C)Bin Max (D)Count (E)Relative %Cumulative %
059112.5%12.5%
6069225.0%37.5%

Bin count, relative share, and cumulative share formulas

Ensure adjacent bins neither overlap nor leave gaps between integers (or use >= Low and < NextLow for continuous decimals).

=COUNTIFS($A$2:$A$9, ">=" & C4, $A$2:$A$9, "<=" & D4)

Cumulative percentage through current bin

Expands $E$2:E4 over total count SUM($E$2:$E$5).

=ROUND(SUM($E$2:E4) / SUM($E$2:$E$5), 4)

Additional worked calculation

Using the same initial input cells:

=ROUND(E5 / SUM($E$2:$E$5), 4)

Additional worked calculation

Using the same initial input cells:

=ROUND(SUM($E$2:E5) / SUM($E$2:$E$5), 4)

Inputs and interpretation

These nonoverlapping inclusive bins assume integer observations from 0 through 100. Decimal values between adjacent bins may be missed, and blank cells can compare as zero. Validate inputs and reconcile bin totals to the number of eligible observations. Percentages divided by total binned counts can sum to 100% even when out-of-range data was excluded. A zero denominator has no defined relative frequency.
