Power System Reliability & Resource Adequacy
Grid N-1 Reserve & ELCC Accredited Capacity Formula
Calculate Total Accredited Unforced Capacity UCAP = Thermal_ICAP*(1 - EFORd) + VRE_Nameplate*ELCC, Planning Reserve Margin Surplus vs Target PRM, and N-1 Largest-Contingency Margin.
Audit grid resource adequacy with EFORd-derated thermal UCAP and renewable ELCC!
Independent System Operators (PJM, NYISO, MISO, ERCOT) never count raw Nameplate Megawatts toward 1-day-in-10-year Loss-of-Load-Expectation (LOLE) Resource Adequacy! Instead, Thermal Installed Capacity ICAP_th is derated by Equivalent Demand Forced Outage Rate EFORd to Thermal Unforced CapacityICAP_th * (1 - EFORd), while Variable Renewable Energy VRE_mw (wind/solar/storage) is multiplied by its Effective Load Carrying Capability factor elcc_pct, giving Total Accredited UCAP = ICAP_th * (1 - EFORd) + VRE_mw * elcc_pct! System planners verify two independent reliability tests against Peak_Demand: (1) Planning Reserve Margin Surplus = UCAP - Peak_Demand * (1 + PRM_target) >= 0, and (2) N-1 Largest Single Generator Contingency Margin = (UCAP - Unit_max) - Peak_Demand >= 0!
Verify on Thermal_ICAP = 10,000 MW (B2), Thermal_EFORd = 0.06 (6.0% forced outage rate -> 9,400 MW Thermal UCAP, B3), Renewable_Nameplate VRE_mw = 5,000 MW (B4), Renewable_ELCC_Credit elcc_pct = 0.24 (24.0% -> 1,200 MW VRE UCAP, B5), Forecast_Peak_Demand = 9,000 MW (B6), Target_PRM = 0.15 (15.0% -> 10,350 MW Required UCAP, B7), and Largest_Single_Unit Unit_max = 1,100 MW (nuclear unit, B8): Total Accredited UCAP is 9,400 + 1,200 = 10,600 MW (E2); PRM Capacity Surplus is 10,600 - 10,350 = +250.00 MW (E3); Achieved UCAP Reserve Margin is (10,600 - 9,000) / 9,000 = 0.1778 (17.78% > 15.0%, E4); and Post-Trip N-1 Contingency Headroom is (10,600 - 1,100) - 9,000 = +500.00 MW (E5)! Spike Peak Demand to 9,600 MW during a heatwave: N-1 Contingency turns negative (-100 MW)!
| Resource Adequacy Metric (10 GW Thermal @ 6% EFORd, 5 GW VRE @ 24% ELCC, 9 GW Peak) | Formula | Verified Output |
|---|---|---|
| Total Accredited System UCAP (MW) | ICAP_th*(1 - EFORd) + VRE_mw*elcc | 10,600.00 MW (vs 15,000 ICAP) |
| PRM Adequacy Surplus / Deficit (MW) | UCAP - Peak_Demand * (1 + PRM_target) | +250.00 MW (Adequate) |
| Achieved UCAP Reserve Margin | (UCAP - Peak_Demand) / Peak_Demand | 0.1778 (17.78% vs 15% Target) |
| N-1 Largest-Unit Contingency Margin | (UCAP - Unit_max) - Peak_Demand | +500.00 MW (Survives 1.1 GW Trip) |
