Peltier Thermoelectric Cooler (TEC) Net Cooling Power (Qc) & Optimal Current (Imax)
Model solid-state Peltier laser/CCD cooling modules via the 3-term cold-plate energy balance Q_c = S_m * T_c * I - 0.5 * I^2 * R_m - K_m * (T_h - T_c) (Watts) and maximum-cooling current I_max = (S_m * T_c) / R_m.
Why cranking DC current too high turns a Peltier cooler into a heater!
Telecom DFB laser diodes, astronomical CCD cameras, and PCR thermal cyclers rely on Bismuth-Telluride (Bi2Te3) Peltier thermoelectric coolers (TECs) for sub-millikelvin temperature stability. Engineers who naively crank up DC drive current I (Amps) expecting colder temperatures get burned by the 3-term Peltier Cold-Side Energy Balance: Q_c = S_m * T_c * I - 0.5 * (I ^ 2) * R_m - K_m * (T_h - T_c)!
Look at the physics of each term: linear Peltier heat pumping S_m * T_c * I pulls heat away from the cold plate (T_c, Kelvin), HALF of internal Joule heating (-0.5 * I^2 * R_m) flows backward into the cold plate quadratically with I^2, and Fourier conduction (-K_m * (T_h - T_c)) leaks heat back from the hot sink (T_h)! Setting dQ_c / dI = 0 proves that cooling peaks at exact optimal current I_max = (S_m * T_c) / R_m—driving any higher current REDUCES net cooling! For a 127-couple Bi2Te3 module (S_m = 0.052 V/K, R_m = 2.40 Ohm, K_m = 0.45 W/K) holding T_c = 273.15 K (0°C) against T_h = 313.15 K (40°C): at I = 3.50 A, Q_c = 17.01 W; I_max = 5.92 A (+24.04 W peak); overdriving at I = 10.00 A collapses Q_c to just +4.04 W, and pushing I = 12.00 A turns Q_c negative (-20.35 W net heating!)!
