Logical & Conditional

Only Calculate If Input Cells Are Not Blank (COUNTA & ISBLANK Gate)

Suppress premature $0.00 totals, negative margins, or #DIV/0! errors on partially entered invoice and quote rows using IF(COUNTA(B2:D2) < 3, "", ...) so formulas stay blank until every required input is entered.

Keep pre-copied invoice & quote templates clean until all required cells are filled!

When you copy a line-item formula like =ROUND(Quantity * Unit_Price * (1 - Discount_Pct), 2) down 50 blank rows of an order template, every empty row displays an ugly 0—or worse, a margin formula =(Price - Cost) / Price explodes with #DIV/0! while a user is halfway through typing the row!

For a single required input cell, IF(ISBLANK(B2), "", ...) hides the result cleanly. Even better, when a calculation requires ALL N cells across a row (say Quantity in B2, Unit_Price in C2, and Discount_Pct in D2—where 0% discount is a valid zero entry!), testing IF(COUNTA(B2:D2) < 3, "", ROUND(B2 * C2 * (1 - D2), 2)) waits until all 3 inputs are populated before displaying the exact net line total!

Row Entry State (B2: Qty, C2: Price, D2: Discount)COUNTA(B2:D2)Guarded Formula Output
All 3 Populated (Qty = 24, Price = $45, Disc = 0.10)3 (Complete)972 ($972.00 Net Line Total)
Zero Discount Explicitly Entered (24, $45, 0)3 (0 Counts as Filled!)1080 ($1,080.00 Net Total)
Partially Filled Row (Qty = 24, Price = $45, Disc = blank)2 (< 3 Incomplete)"" (Clean Blank Cell)

Multi-Cell Completeness Gate: Only Calculate When All 3 Inputs Are Non-Blank

Uses COUNTA(B2:D2) < 3 so a valid numeric 0 in Discount_Pct (D2) still counts as a completed entry.

=IF(COUNTA(B2:D2) < 3, "", ROUND(B2 * C2 * (1 - D2), 2))

Single-Cell Blank Gate With Division-by-Zero Guard for Gross Margin (%)

Suppresses calculation while Unit_Price (C2) or Unit_Cost (E2) is blank, and guards against C2 <= 0.

=IF(OR(ISBLANK(C2), ISBLANK(E2)), "", IF(C2 <= 0, "Invalid Price", ROUND(100 * (C2 - E2) / C2, 2)))
