NIOSH Lifting Equation: Recommended Weight Limit (RWL) & Lifting Index
Use supplied task multipliers to calculate a NIOSH recommended weight limit and numerical lifting index. Validate inputs and preserve precision without presenting a personal safe-lifting guarantee.
A calculation from supplied multipliers
The revised NIOSH equation multiplies a 23 kg load constant by six task factors: horizontal, vertical, distance, asymmetry, frequency and coupling. This example starts with illustrative multipliers; it does not derive them from workplace measurements or validate whether the task satisfies the model’s assumptions.
RNLE applies to two-handed lifting within the conditions documented in its applications manual. A single-task lifting index is not the composite lifting index for a job with several lifting tasks. Task assessment, multiplier selection and interpretation require the manual and competent ergonomic review.
Calculate the recommended weight limit
B2 must be 23 kg and each multiplier in B3:B8 must be numeric between 0 and 1. All six are required: PRODUCT otherwise ignores blank or text cells and can silently overstate the result.
The illustrative factors give an RWL of approximately 10.40 kg. They are supplied values, not a claim that a particular reach distance or posture necessarily produces this exact combination. E2 retains full precision.

B9 is the nonnegative load in kilograms. Divide it by the unrounded RWL. At 16 kg the index rounds to 1.54; at 35 kg it rounds to 3.37.
NIOSH recommends an LI or CLI no greater than 1. This is a task-assessment metric, not an injury probability, spinal compression measurement or guarantee that any individual can lift safely. This worksheet therefore returns the numerical index without prescribing a mechanical lift or labeling a task universally safe.
A zero multiplier produces zero RWL and leaves LI undefined; it must not be replaced with a favorable risk label. The message requests review of the calculation rather than assigning a finite index.
