NFL Quarterback Passer Rating formula (0 to 158.3 Official Scale)

Calculate NFL passer rating with four clamped components and compare it with adjusted yards per attempt (AY/A).

Why the maximum displays as 158.3

NFL passer rating combines completion rate, passing yards per attempt, touchdown rate and interception rate. Each component is limited to the interval from 0 to 2.375 before the sum is scaled by 100/6.

The unrounded maximum is 158.333…; 158.3 is the one-decimal display, not the exact mathematical result. Reaching the ceiling does not require completing every pass. This measure is not ESPN QBR and does not include rushing or sacks.

This example requires numeric integer counts: attempts, completions, touchdowns and interceptions must be nonnegative; completions plus interceptions cannot exceed attempts, and passing touchdowns cannot exceed completions. Passing yards can be negative. No attempts yields N/A rather than zero.

Adjusted yards per attempt (AY/A)

This companion formula is AY/A: it adjusts passing yards for touchdowns and interceptions. It is not adjusted net yards per attempt (ANY/A), which additionally accounts for sacks and sack yards. AY/A can be negative and is not clamped to the passer-rating scale.

=IF(COUNT(B2:B6)<>5,"Invalid inputs",IF(OR(B2<0,B3<0,B5<0,B6<0,B2<>INT(B2),B3<>INT(B3),B5<>INT(B5),B6<>INT(B6),B3+B6>B2,B5>B3),"Invalid inputs",IF(B2=0,"N/A",ROUND((B4 + 20 * B5 - 45 * B6) / B2, 2))))
