True Shooting Percentage (TS%) & Effective FG% (eFG%) Basketball formulas

Calculate effective field-goal percentage and the conventional box-score approximation of true shooting, with consistent scoring inputs.

Use a consistent box score and distinguish shooting from possessions

eFG adjusts made field goals for three-point value. TS uses total points and an approximate shooting-attempt denominator. Neither is an exact possession count or a measure of total offensive value.

The0.44 free-throw multiplier is a conventional aggregate approximation; it is not exact for each player or game. These ratios can exceed100%, so they are not probabilities of making a shot.

The corrected example is28 points: ten field goals including four threes produce24 points, with four made free throws out of five attempts adding4. All counts must be nonnegative integers, makes cannot exceed attempts, and points must be consistent with field-goal points plus at most one point per free-throw attempt. Zero denominators return Not applicable rather than a measured0% performance.

True Shooting Percentage TS% = PTS / (2 * (FGA + 0.44 * FTA))

Use the conventional0.44 approximation. A missing or inconsistent box score is rejected; no shooting attempts produce Not applicable.

Effective Field Goal Percentage eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 * 3PM) / FGA

Weights made 3-pointers at 1.5x a 2-point field goal.
