Numbers and totals
MOD function: calculate leftover items after filling complete packs
Find how many loose items remain when packing whole quantities into fixed-size sleeves or cartons, and check exact multiples and zero-divisor errors.
Packing 53 labels into sleeves of 12
A print table packs 53 shipping labels (A2) into protective sleeves that hold 12 labels each (B2). Four full sleeves hold 4 × 12 = 48 labels, leaving 53 − 48 = 5 loose labels.
| Total labels (A) | Labels per sleeve (B) | Loose remainder |
|---|---|---|
| 53 | 12 | 5 |
| 48 | 12 | 0 |
| 0 | 12 | 0 |
Compute the remainder directly with MOD
MOD(number, divisor) returns the remainder after division. For A2 = 53 and B2 = 12, =MOD(A2, B2) returns 5. When the order is an exact multiple of 12—such as 48 in A3—MOD returns 0, confirming every sleeve is completely full.
=MOD(A2,B2)Zero quantities and zero pack size
Zero items divided into 12-item sleeves (MOD(0, 12)) cleanly returns 0. However, if the pack size in B2 is 0 or blank, division by zero is undefined and MOD(53, 0) returns #DIV/0!.
