Lawton-Brody Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL 0–8)

Assess executive community-living independence (0–8 points across Telephone, Shopping, Food Preparation, Housekeeping, Laundry, Transportation, Medication Responsibility, and Finances) to detect early dementia and care needs.

Catch early cognitive decline years before basic bathing or feeding ADL scores drop!

Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or early Alzheimer’s dementia routinely score a perfect 6/6 on basic Katz ADLs—yet silently miss pill doses, overpay utility scams, or get lost driving! M. Powell Lawton and Elaine M. Brody (The Gerontologist 1969) designed the 8-domain Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL, 0–8 points) scale specifically to test higher-order executive community functioning!

Each of the eight domains scores 1 point for independent functional competence and 0 points for dependence: (1) Ability to Use Telephone, (2) Shopping, (3) Food Preparation, (4) Housekeeping, (5) Laundry, (6) Mode of Transportation (drives or arranges public transit independently), (7) Responsibility for Own Medications, and (8) Ability to Handle Finances. Tracking serial IADL scores (0 = completely dependent to 8 = fully autonomous community living) guides medication pillbox supervision, driving safety evaluations, and financial power-of-attorney safeguards!
