Rent’s Rule IC Pin Count & Chiplet I/O Formula
Calculate Landman-Russo Rent’s Rule Signal Terminal Count T = k * N_gates^p, External I/O Pins per Gate Locality Ratio, Package Micro-Bump Surplus/Deficit, and Pin-Limited vs Core-Limited Die Status.
Size BGA package balls and 2.5D chiplet micro-bumps with Landman-Russo Rent’s Rule!
First observed at IBM by E.F. Rent (1960) and formalized by B.S. Landman and R.L. Russo (1971, IEEE Transactions on Computers), Rent’s Rule relates the number of external signal I/O pins T required by a partitioned logic block or chiplet of N_gates logic gates via a power law: T = ROUND(k_Rent * (N_gates ^ p_Rent), 0), where k_Rent (typically 3–5) is the average terminals per gate and Rent’s Exponent p_Rent (0 < p_Rent < 1) measures topological interconnect randomness—ranging from p ~ 0.12–0.35 for regular SRAM/systolic arrays, to p ~ 0.45–0.55 for structured microprocessors, up to p ~ 0.60–0.75 for random crossbar/FPGA control logic!
Verify on Partition_Gates N_gates = 1,000,000 gates (B2), Terminals_Per_Gate k_Rent = 4.0 (B3), Microprocessor_Exponent p_Rent = 0.50 (B4), and Package_Signal_Ball_Limit = 3,000 pins (B5): Predicted Signal Terminal Count T is 4 * (1,000,000 ^ 0.50) = 4 * 1,000 = 4,000 pins (E2); External Pins per Gate is 4,000 / 1,000,000 = 0.0040 (showing 99.6% internal wire locality!, E3); Pin Excess over Package Limit is +1,000 pins (E4), flagging "Pin-Limited (Requires SerDes or 2.5D Interposer)" (E5)! Partition to a 250,000-gate cached tile (B2 = 250,000 -> T = 2,000 pins <= 3,000): status flips to "Core-Limited (Fits Package I/O Budget)"!
| Rent’s Rule Packaging Metric (N=1,000,000 Gates, k=4, p=0.50, Limit=3,000 Pins) | Formula | Verified Output |
|---|---|---|
| Predicted Signal Pins T | ROUND(k_Rent * (N_gates ^ p_Rent), 0) | 4,000 pins (2,000 @ N=250k) |
| External Pins per Gate Ratio | T / N_gates | 0.0040 (k * N^(p - 1)) |
| Pin Excess Over Package Cap | T - Package_Signal_Limit | +1,000 pins (-1,000 @ N=250k) |
| Die I/O Bottleneck Status | T > Package_Limit Check | Pin-Limited (Requires SerDes or 2.5D Interposer) |

Test N_gates = 100,000 with high random-logic Rent exponent p = 0.60 (B2 = 100,000, B4 = 0.60): even at 10x fewer gates, (10^5)^0.60 = 1,000 so T still hits 4,000 pins!
