Krippendorff’s Alpha (α) Formula: Coincidence Matrix & Finite-Sample Reliability
Calculate Klaus Krippendorff’s content-analysis reliability coefficient α = 1 - D_o / D_e = 1 - (n - 1)*n_01 / (n_0*n_1) from a symmetric 2×2 coincidence matrix.
Why content-analysis and NLP annotation studies require Krippendorff’s α >= 0.800 (and tentative >= 0.667)!
Klaus Krippendorff (1970, 2004) built a unified reliability coefficient α = 1 - D_o / D_e around symmetric pairable-value COINCIDENCE counts (where every unit double-coded by 2 annotators contributes 2 pairable entries to total n = n_00 + 2*n_01 + n_11, with off-diagonal cell n_01 = n_10 counting mismatched pairs)! Unlike Scott’s pi, Krippendorff’s expected disagreement D_e incorporates finite-sample sampling-without-replacement denominator (n - 1), yielding exact nominal binary α = 1 - ((n - 1) * n_01) / (n_0 * n_1) where n_0 = n_00 + n_01 and n_1 = n_11 + n_01!
Across 50 double-coded clinical notes (n = 100 pairable values: n_00 = 36, n_01 = n_10 = 6, n_11 = 52 -> marginals n_0 = 42, n_1 = 58), observed disagreement is D_o = 2*6 / 100 = 0.1200 and Krippendorff’s α = 0.7562 (tentative 0.667–0.800 tier)—rising to α = 0.9187 when mismatched pairs drop to n_01 = 2 (n_00 = 40, n_11 = 56)!
