ISERROR function: flag and count any formula error without masking values
Return TRUE for #DIV/0!, #VALUE!, #N/A, #REF!, and #NUM! using ISERROR so audit columns and pre-send checks spot broken rows immediately.
When you want TRUE/FALSE instead of IFERROR replacement
IFERROR replaces an error with a fallback value such as 0—handy for display, dangerous when you actually need to know how many rows failed before sending an invoice file. ISERROR(value) returns boolean TRUE for any spreadsheet error and FALSE for numbers, text, or blanks.
Converting booleans to 1/0 with --ISERROR(...) inside SUMPRODUCT counts broken rows across an audit column.
| Row | Revenue (A) | Units (B) | Unit Revenue =A/B (C) | ISERROR(C) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 480 | 12 | 40 | FALSE |
| 3 | 300 | 0 | #DIV/0! | TRUE |
| 4 | 250 | Pending | #VALUE! | TRUE |
| 5 | 0 | 5 | 0 | FALSE (zero is valid, not an error) |
Flag individual rows and gate report status
Checking ISERROR on a calculation cell distinguishes a legitimate zero result (0 / 5 = 0 -> FALSE) from division by zero (300 / 0 = #DIV/0! -> TRUE) or text arithmetic (#VALUE! -> TRUE).
=ISERROR(A3 / B3)Catch lookup #N/A errors alongside math errors
Unlike Excel's older ISERR function (which excludes #N/A), ISERROR returns TRUE for every error code including #N/A.
