Stepper Motor Microstep Resolution & Corner Speed Formula

Calculate Microsteps per Revolution, Ballscrew Linear Microstep Resolution (um), Required Step-Pulse Frequency (kHz), and Inductive L/R Chopper Corner Speed (RPM).

Buying a "high-holding-torque" high-inductance NEMA 23 stepper and running it on 24 V starves phase current above 127 RPM—stalling rapid G0 moves!

A standard `1.8°` (`N_{fs} = 200` full steps/rev, `N_r = 50` rotor teeth = `50` electrical cycles per mechanical revolution!) **Two-Phase Hybrid Stepper Motor** driven by a `M`-microstep sinusoidal PWM chopper (`e.g., M = 16 -> 3,200 usteps/rev`) coupled to a Ballscrew of Lead `p_{lead}` (`mm/rev`) achieves **Theoretical Linear Axis Resolution `Delta_x = (p_{lead} * 1,000) / (N_{fs} * M)`** (`um/ustep`) and demands **Step-Pulse Clock Frequency `f_{step} = ((v_{feed} / p_{lead}) * N_{fs} * M) / 1,000`** (`kHz`) at Linear Feedrate `v_{feed}` (`mm/s`)! Yet beginners pick a `4.2` A motor with huge `8.6` mH winding inductance `L` on a cheap `24` V supply and wonder why torque vanishes above `2` rev/s: because `50` electrical cycles per turn create **Electrical Reactance `X_L = (N_{fs} / 4) * omega_m * L`**, the chopper driver loses ability to push full rated current `I_{phase}` (`A`) above **Inductive Corner Speed `N_{corner} = (60 * V_{bus}) / (2 * PI() * (N_{fs} / 4) * (L_{mH} / 1,000) * I_{phase})`** (`RPM`), beyond which pull-out torque collapses as `1 / RPM`!

Verify on a Low-Inductance `3.8` mH NEMA 23 CNC Router Axis on a `48` V Chopper Bus—Full_Steps_Rev `N_{fs}` = 200 (B2), Microstep_Subdivision `M` = 16 (B3), Ballscrew_Lead `p` = 5.0 mm (B4), Rapid_Feedrate `v` = 80.0 mm/s (B5 -> `960` RPM!), Chopper_Supply `V_{bus}` = 48.0 V (B6), Winding_Inductance `L` = 3.8 mH (B7), and Phase_Current `I` = 4.2 A (B8): Microsteps/Rev equals `3,200` (E2), Linear Resolution equals `1.5625` um (E3), Step Clock equals `51.20` kHz (E4), and Full-Current Corner Speed reaches **`574.4` RPM** (E5)!

24 V Power Supply + High-Inductance 8.6 mH Winding Mid-Speed Stall Check

Swap to a `24` V supply (`B6 = 24`) and high-turn `8.6` mH stepper (`B7 = 8.6` mH): Corner Speed E5 plunges `4.5x` from `574.4` RPM down to **`126.9` RPM** (`10.6` mm/s)—meaning at your `80` mm/s (`960` RPM) rapid traverse, phase current is choked `7.6x` below rated and the axis skips steps loudly!
