Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman (HKSJ) Random-Effects Standard Error Formula

Eliminate anti-conservative DerSimonian-Laird false positives in small-k meta-analyses using the Röver-Knapp truncated HKSJ variance factor q = MAX(1, [1/(k-1)] * Σ w_i*(y_i - μ_RE)²) and SE_HKSJ = SQRT(q / Σw_i*).

Why Cochrane and IQWiG now mandate Hartung-Knapp over conventional DerSimonian-Laird Z-intervals when k <= 10!

Conventional DerSimonian-Laird random-effects confidence intervals μ̂_RE ± 1.96 / SQRT(Σw_i*) treat estimated τ^2 as known without error—producing Type I error rates exceeding 15–20% instead of 5% when pooling only k = 3 to 6 heterogeneous clinical trials! Joachim Hartung & Guido Knapp (2001, Statistics in Medicine) and Kurex Sidik & Jeffrey Jonkman (2002) replaced 1 / Σw_i* with an empirical weighted-residual variance estimator q / Σw_i*, where q = [1 / (k - 1)] * Σ [w_i* * (y_i - μ̂_RE)^2], paired with a t_(k-1) critical value!

Incorporating the Röver-Knapp-IQWiG ad-hoc truncation MAX(1, q) ensures SE_HKSJ = SQRT(MAX(1, q) / Σw_i*) is never narrower than conventional random-effects SE when observed study effects happen to cluster tightly! Across k = 4 trials (y = [-0.95, -0.55, -0.05, +0.35], random-effects weights w* = [6.2, 8.5, 9.1, 11.2]), pooled μ̂_RE = -0.2029, q = 2.7071, and SE_HKSJ = 0.2781 (versus naive 1/√35 = 0.1690 when q < 1 clamps at 1.0)!

Röver-Knapp Truncated HKSJ Standard Error SE_HKSJ = SQRT(MAX(1, q) / Σw*)

Computes SQRT(MAX(1, SUM(D2:D5)/(COUNT(B2:B5) - 1)) / SUM(C2:C5)) from random-effects weights C2:C5 and weighted squared residuals D2:D5.

=IF(OR(MIN(C2:C5) <= 0, COUNT(B2:B5) < 2), "Weights Must Be Positive", ROUND(SQRT(MAX(1, SUM(D2:D5) / (COUNT(B2:B5) - 1)) / SUM(C2:C5)), 4))

Unadjusted Hartung-Knapp Dispersion Factor q & Pooled Effect μ̂_RE

Outputs raw HKSJ variance inflation factor q = [1 / (k - 1)] * Σ w_i*(y_i - μ̂_RE)^2.
