Get total from percentage: find the whole when you know a part and its % share
Recover a whole from a known part and its fraction of that same whole.
Rearrange Part = Total * Pct into Total = Part / Pct
If an $18,000 escrow deposit represents 15% (0.15) of a property purchase, dividing DepositPaid by DownPct recovers the full purchase price: $18,000 / 0.15 = $120,000.
Subtracting the paid deposit from that recovered total immediately gives the remaining balance to finance ($120,000 - $18,000 = $102,000).
| Known Part (A) | Known Share % (B) | Implied Full Total (A/B) | Remaining Balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18000 | 0.15 | 120000 | 102000 |
| 4500 | 0.2 | 22500 | 18000 |
Implied total and remaining balance formulas
Always guard B2 = 0 so a 0% placeholder returns "Undefined" rather than #DIV/0!.
=IF(B2=0, "Undefined", ROUND(A2 / B2, 2))Remaining balance (100% - Share%)
(A2 / B2) - A2 computes the remaining 85% ($102,000).
=ROUND((A2 / B2) - A2, 2)Inputs and interpretation
For the deposit example, require a nonnegative part and 0 < share <= 1; enter 15% as 0.15, not 15. A tax rate on a net amount is not the tax fraction of the gross total. The remaining-balance formula also requires a nonzero share. This model omits fees and any separate financing charges.
