Logical & Lookup Formulas

Range Dimensions & Relative Row/Column Position (ROW, COLUMN, ROWS, COLUMNS)

Compute dynamic 1-based relative column/row offsets COLUMN(D4) - COLUMN($B$4) + 1 for VLOOKUP col_index_num and audit total matrix capacity ROWS(rng) * COLUMNS(rng) immune to inserted rows or columns.

Why hardcoded VLOOKUP column numbers break the moment someone inserts a column!

Hardcoding 3 inside =VLOOKUP(A2, $B$4:$F$8, 3, FALSE) breaks silently as soon as a colleague inserts a column before B (shifting sheet column letters) or inside the table! Anchoring relative position with =COLUMN(D4) - COLUMN($B$4) + 1 converts sheet-level coordinates (Column D = 4, starting Column B = 2) into a rock-solid 1-based offset (4 - 2 + 1 = 3) that automatically increments as you drag across headers and survives any columns inserted to the left of B!

Likewise, pairing ROWS(B4:F8) and COLUMNS(B4:F8) measures exact table height (5 rows), width (5 columns), and total cell count ROWS(B4:F8) * COLUMNS(B4:F8) = 25 cells dynamically!

Target Cell Inside $B$4:$F$8Sheet Coordinate (ROW / COLUMN)1-Based Relative Offset FormulaOffset Returned
Top-Left Anchor Cell B4ROW = 4, COLUMN = 2COLUMN(B4) - COLUMN($B$4) + 11 (First Column)
Third Table Column D4ROW = 4, COLUMN = 4COLUMN(D4) - COLUMN($B$4) + 13 (Dynamic col_index_num)
Bottom-Right Cell F8ROW = 8, COLUMN = 6ROW(F8) - ROW($B$4) + 15 (Fifth Row of 5×5 = 25)

1-Based Relative Column Index Within Any Anchored Range

Subtracts the anchor column COLUMN($B$4) from target column COLUMN(D4) and adds 1 so the leftmost column of the table always equals 1.

=COLUMN(D4) - COLUMN($B$4) + 1

Total Matrix Cell Capacity = ROWS(range) * COLUMNS(range)

Multiplies table row count by column count to audit total grid capacity regardless of blank cells.

=ROWS(B4:F8) * COLUMNS(B4:F8)
