Unit Step Threshold Gate (GESTEP Heaviside Pattern) for Quota & Tier Counting
Implement exact binary step indicators (1 when Value >= Step, 0 otherwise) to gate quota attainment, flag non-negative cash flows, and compute marginal bonus tiers without nested IF chains.
Replacing add-in GESTEP with clean boolean arithmetic
Excel's Engineering function GESTEP(number, [step]) evaluates the discrete Heaviside unit step H(number - step): it returns 1 when number >= step and 0 when number < step (defaulting step to 0 when omitted).
Writing IF(B2 >= C2, 1, 0) or --(B2 >= C2) reproduces GESTEP identically without Engineering add-in restrictions, and vectorizes inside SUMPRODUCT(--(B2:B5 >= C2:C5)) across entire tables.
| Booked ($k) | Quota Step ($k) | Quota Gate (step=100) | Zero Step (step=0) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 | 100 | 0 | 1 |
| 100 | 100 | 1 (Exact boundary) | 1 |
| 125 | 100 | 1 | 1 |
| -10 | 100 | 0 | 0 (Net clawback) |
Row-Level Threshold & Zero-Step Indicators
Compare the metric against an explicit step threshold or against 0 for non-negativity screening.
=IF(B2 >= C2, 1, 0)Vectorized Count of Rows Clearing Individual Thresholds
Unlike COUNTIF (which compares a column against a single scalar criteria), SUMPRODUCT(--(B2:B5 >= C2:C5)) compares each row against its own row-specific quota target.
