Gamma Shielding Half-Value Layer (HVL) & Buildup Formula
Calculate Lead/Concrete Half-Value Layer HVL (cm), Tenth-Value Layer TVL (cm), Narrow-Beam Uncollided Dose Rate (mSv/hr), and Broad-Beam Compton-Buildup Dose Rate D (mSv/hr).
Never size broad-beam radiation shields with pure EXP(-mu*x)—Compton-scattered photons double dose via Buildup Factor B!
Hospital PET/radiotherapy vaults and industrial Cobalt-60 / Iridium-192 NDT radiography bunkers attenuate gamma dose rate D_0 (mSv/hr) across absorber thickness x (cm) of linear attenuation coefficient mu (cm^-1). While Half-Value Layer HVL = LN(2) / mu and Tenth-Value Layer TVL = LN(10) / mu = 3.3219 * HVL describe narrow-beam uncollided primary photons D_uncollided = D_0 * EXP(-mu * x), real thick walls forward-scatter secondary Compton-degraded photons into the detector! Omitting Broad-Beam Dose Buildup Factor B(mu * x) >= 1.0 underpredicts worker exposure by 2x to 10x! Exact Broad-Beam Transmitted Dose Rate is D_total = B * D_0 * EXP(-mu * x)!
Verify on a 6.0 cm Lead Hot-Cell Shield for ~1.25 MeV Gamma Photons—Unshielded_Dose_Rate D_0 = 80.0 mSv/hr (B2), Lead_Linear_Attenuation mu = 0.58 cm^-1 (B3 -> HVL = LN(2) / 0.58 = 1.20 cm in E2 and TVL = LN(10) / 0.58 = 3.97 cm in E3), Shield_Thickness x = 6.0 cm (5.0 HVLs, B4), and Dose_Buildup_Factor B = 2.10 (B5): Naive Narrow-Beam Dose would claim 80 * EXP(-3.48) = 2.465 mSv/hr (E4), whereas True Broad-Beam Dose Rate with Compton Buildup is 2.10 * 2.465 = 5.176 mSv/hr (E5)!
| Gamma Shielding KPI (D0 = 80 mSv/hr, Lead mu = 0.58 cm^-1, x = 6 cm, B = 2.10) | Formula | Verified Output |
|---|---|---|
| Half-Value Layer HVL (cm) | LN(2) / Linear_Attenuation_mu | 1.20 cm |
| Tenth-Value Layer TVL (cm) | LN(10) / Linear_Attenuation_mu | 3.97 cm |
| Narrow-Beam Uncollided Dose | D0_mSv_hr * EXP(-mu * x_cm) | 2.465 mSv/hr (0.242 @ x = 10 cm) |
| Broad-Beam Total Dose (mSv/hr) | Buildup_B * D0 * EXP(-mu * x_cm) | 5.176 mSv/hr (0.630 @ 10 cm, B=2.6) |
Broad-Beam Gamma Attenuation with Compton Buildup Factor Formula
Validate Unshielded_Dose D_0 > 0, Attenuation mu > 0, Thickness x >= 0, and Buildup_Factor B >= 1.0 (B = 1.0 only at x = 0 or collimated narrow-beam geometry)!

Add 4.0 cm (~1 Tenth-Value Layer) of lead bringing Shield_Thickness B4 to 10.0 cm (with deeper Compton Buildup B5 = 2.60): Uncollided Dose E4 drops ~10x to 0.242 mSv/hr and Broad-Beam Total Dose E5 falls cleanly to 0.630 mSv/hr!
