Fisher Equation formula: Exact Real Interest Rate ((1 + i) / (1 + pi) - 1)

Convert effective nominal and real returns over the same period using an explicit inflation factor, with guards against invalid price-level changes.

Match periods and distinguish a return identity from a forecast

For realized effective returns over the same period, divide the nominal wealth factor by the observed price-level factor: real=(1+nominal)/(1+inflation)-1. Enter decimals, so 8% is0.08. A quoted APR or continuously compounded rate must first be converted to the matching effective-period rate.

The subtraction approximation is not always an overestimate. Its error equals (nominal-inflation)*inflation/(1+inflation), whose sign depends on both inputs. Negative inflation and negative real returns are valid cases when the price-level factor stays positive.

For future scenarios, inflation and returns are assumptions rather than guaranteed purchasing power. Treasury/TIPS yield differences also reflect risk and liquidity premia; this two-input exercise is not a TIPS pricing or pure expected-inflation estimator. Fees, taxes and interim cash flows are excluded.

Exact Fisher Real Interest Rate = ((1 + Nominal) / (1 + Inflation)) - 1

Divides gross nominal wealth factor (1 + B2) by price-level factor (1 + B3) to measure true purchasing-power growth.

Required Nominal Yield for a Target Real Return B4: (1 + r_real)*(1 + pi) - 1

Includes the cross-product r_real * pi needed to protect interest earnings from inflation.
