Dynamic Chart Title Formula: Formatted KPI Headline & Signed YoY Delta Banner
Build a self-updating executive Chart Title cell using TEXT formatting and directional + / - variance logic so chart headlines never show stale numbers or raw floating-point decimals.
Format numbers explicitly with TEXT() before concatenating chart headlines!
Linking a chart title box to a formula cell (=Sheet1!$D$1) keeps executive decks synchronized, but naive concatenation like ="Revenue: $" & B3 & " (" & (B3-B4)/B4 & ")" prints ugly unformatted strings like "Revenue: $1450000 (0.16000000001)"! Wrapping numbers in TEXT(B3, "#,##0") and TEXT(ABS((B3-B4)/B4), "0.0%") preserves thousand separators and clean percentage precision.
Adding an explicit sign branch IF(B3 >= B4, "+", "-") produces crisp boardroom titles such as "Q3 2026 Revenue: $1,450,000 (+16.0% vs Prior)".
| Scenario | Current (B3) vs Prior (B4) | Generated Dynamic Chart Title |
|---|---|---|
| Expansion Quarter | $1,450,000 vs $1,250,000 | Q3 2026 Revenue: $1,450,000 (+16.0% vs Prior) |
| Contraction Quarter | $1,100,000 vs $1,250,000 | Q3 2026 Revenue: $1,100,000 (-12.0% vs Prior) |
Self-Updating Executive KPI Chart Title String
Combines period label B2, comma-formatted revenue B3, and signed percentage delta against prior period B4.
=IF(B4 <= 0, "Prior Baseline Must Be Positive", B2 & " Revenue: $" & TEXT(B3, "#,##0") & " (" & IF(B3 >= B4, "+", "-") & TEXT(ABS(B3 - B4) / B4, "0.0%") & " vs Prior)")Signed Dollar Variance Callout ($k)
Computes exact numeric dollar change rounded to nearest thousand for subtitle callouts.
