Differential Band Brake Force & Self-Locking Check Formula

Calculate Euler Band Tension Ratio exp(mu*theta), Tight & Slack Band Tensions T1 & T2 (N), Differential Lever Actuating Force F (N), and Self-Locking Grab Detection.

Move a differential brake’s tight-side pin 15 mm too far from the pivot and the hoist drum violently self-locks with ZERO hand force!

Hoist drums, oilfield drawworks, and excavator swing drives use **Differential Band Brakes** where a flexible friction-lined steel band wraps angle `theta` (rad) around Drum Radius `r` (m) with Lining Friction `mu`. Under drum rotation pulling Tight Side `T_1` toward the lever pivot at short arm `a` (mm) while Slack Side `T_2` pulls away on longer arm `b` (mm), Euler belt friction enforces **`T_1 / T_2 = EXP(mu * theta)`** and Braking Torque **`M_b = (T_1 - T_2) * r`** (`T_2 = (M_b / r) / (EXP(mu * theta) - 1)`). Summing moments about the fulcrum for Hand/Cylinder Lever Length `L` (mm) gives **Actuating Force `F = (b * T_2 - a * T_1) / L`**! Notice the minus sign `-a * T_1`: tight-side tension HELPS apply the brake (self-energizing mechanical advantage!), UNTIL `a / b >= 1 / EXP(mu * theta)` (`b * T_2 <= a * T_1`), where `F <= 0`—triggering violent **Self-Locking Grab** that snaps hoist cables on contact!

Verify on a `960` N·m Winch Drum Differential Band Brake—Braking_Torque `M_b` = 960 N·m (B2), Drum_Radius `r` = 0.20 m (B3), Wrap_Angle = 225° (B4), Woven_Lining_Friction `mu` = 0.32 (B5 -> Tension Ratio `k = 3.514` in E2, `T_1 = 6,709.6` N in E3, `T_2 = 1,909.6` N in E4), Slack_Pin_Arm `b` = 110 mm (B6), Tight_Pin_Arm `a` = 25 mm (B7), and Lever_Length `L` = 550 mm (B8): Required Hand Force is a smooth, controllable `76.94` N (E5)!

Euler-Band Tension Split & Differential Fulcrum Self-Locking Criterion Formula

Validate `Torque M_b > 0`, `Radius r > 0`, `Wrap` in `[90°, 330°]`, `Friction mu` in `(0.05, 0.80]`, `Slack_Arm b > 0`, `Tight_Arm a >= 0`, and `Lever L > b` right on `E2` (checking `ISTEXT(E2)` on `E3..E4` so `E5` can report `"SELF-LOCKING GRAB DANGER"` when `b * T_2 <= a * T_1` without blanking tension readouts)!

=LET(mb_n, B2, rd_m, B3, th_r, B4 * (PI() / 180), mu_f, B5, bs_m, B6, at_m, B7, lv_m, B8, kr_t, EXP(mu_f * th_r), t2_n, (mb_n / rd_m) / (kr_t - 1), t1_n, kr_t * t2_n, nm_t, bs_m * t2_n - at_m * t1_n, IF(OR(mb_n <= 0, rd_m <= 0, B4 < 90, B4 > 330, mu_f <= 0.05, mu_f > 0.8, bs_m <= 0, at_m < 0, lv_m <= bs_m), "Invalid Brake Input", IF(nm_t <= 0, "SELF-LOCKING GRAB DANGER", ROUND(nm_t / lv_m, 2))))

Over-Energized Tight Pin (a = 30 mm vs 40 mm) Violent Grab Check (Set Tight Arm B7 = 30 then 40 mm)

Shift the tight-side clevis pin outward from `25` to `30` mm (`B7 = 30`): Actuating Force E5 drops nearly `5x` to `15.95` N (hair-trigger sensitivity!). Push it to `40` mm (`B7 = 40`, exceeding critical `b / k = 110 / 3.514 = 31.3` mm!): E5 immediately flags `"SELF-LOCKING GRAB DANGER"` because friction moment `a * T_1` overpowers `b * T_2`!

=IF(ISTEXT(E2), E2, LET(kr_t, EXP(B5 * (B4 * (PI() / 180))), t2_n, (B2 / B3) / (kr_t - 1), ROUND(kr_t * t2_n, 1)))
