Date & Time
Days Until Next Anniversary or Renewal Ignoring Year (DATE Rollover)
Calculate exact calendar days remaining from a reference date until the next annual birthday, contract renewal, or calibration month/day—rolling cleanly into YEAR(ref) + 1 when this year’s date has passed.
Why DATEDIF("yd") has leap-year quirks—and explicit DATE rollover never misses!
HR birthday calendars, SaaS annual renewal trackers, and equipment recalibration schedules store an original origin date (such as hire date 2019-03-20 or contract start 2022-11-10) and need the exact countdown in days from a reference date (say 2026-10-15) to the NEXT occurrence of that month and day! Legacy DATEDIF(start, end, "yd") is notoriouslyquirky across February 29 leap boundaries and measures backward from birth year rather than forward from a live reference date!
Projecting the anniversary into the reference year via DATE(YEAR(Ref), MONTH(Origin), DAY(Origin)) is crystal clear: if that date is >= Ref (e.g., 2026-11-10 >= 2026-10-15), subtract Ref directly (= 26 days); if this year’s anniversary has already passed (e.g., 2026-03-20 < 2026-10-15), project into YEAR(Ref) + 1 (2027-03-20 - 2026-10-15 = 156 days)!
| Origin Date (Hire / Contract) | Reference Date (2026-10-15) | Next Annual Occurrence | Days Remaining |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022-11-10 (Upcoming This Year) | 2026-10-15 | 2026-11-10 (Same Year) | 26 days |
| 2019-03-20 (Already Passed in 2026) | 2026-10-15 | 2027-03-20 (Year + 1 Rollover) | 156 days |
| 2021-10-15 (Exact Anniversary Today) | 2026-10-15 | 2026-10-15 (Today!) | 0 days |
Days Remaining Until Next Annual Month/Day Occurrence (Ignoring Origin Year)
Projects origin date B2 into YEAR($E$2), or YEAR($E$2) + 1 if already passed, and subtracts reference date $E$2.
=IF(DATE(YEAR($E$2), MONTH(B2), DAY(B2)) >= $E$2, DATE(YEAR($E$2), MONTH(B2), DAY(B2)) - $E$2, DATE(YEAR($E$2) + 1, MONTH(B2), DAY(B2)) - $E$2)30-Day Renewal / Anniversary Alert Flag
Flags contracts or milestones whose next annual date falls within 0 to 30 days of $E$2.
=IF(IF(DATE(YEAR($E$2), MONTH(B2), DAY(B2)) >= $E$2, DATE(YEAR($E$2), MONTH(B2), DAY(B2)) - $E$2, DATE(YEAR($E$2) + 1, MONTH(B2), DAY(B2)) - $E$2) <= 30, "Due Within 30 Days", "Future")Try the example
