Count total characters in a range (with or without spaces)
Join an entire column with empty delimiter "" inside TEXTJOIN and measure LEN once—no helper column required.
Use LEN(TEXTJOIN("", TRUE, range)) to sum lengths in one step
The combined length of concatenated strings equals the exact sum of their individual lengths: LEN("Fast Cloud" & "Zero Setup" & "Try Pro") = 10 + 10 + 7 = 27.
Passing "" as the delimiter in TEXTJOIN("", TRUE, A2:A4) concatenates every non-empty cell in the range without adding separator characters, so wrapping it in LEN totals the character budget across all cells at once.
The average assumes populated text cells with no formula-generated empty strings; COUNTA counts those formulas. Guard a zero denominator for an entirely empty range. For large totals use per-cell LEN helpers and SUM rather than building one oversized string. Removing ordinary spaces does not remove all whitespace.
| AdHeadline (A) | Total Chars | Non-Space Chars |
|---|---|---|
| Fast Cloud | 10 | 9 |
| Zero Setup | 10 | 9 |
| Try Pro | 7 | 6 |
Total characters, non-space characters, and average length
Wrapping SUBSTITUTE(..., " ", "") around TEXTJOIN strips spaces across the entire range (27 - 3 spaces = 24).
=LEN(TEXTJOIN("", TRUE, A2:A4))Exclude spaces across the range
Dividing total characters by COUNTA(A2:A4) gives average characters per populated row (27 / 3 = 9).
