Count Matches Between Two Columns: Row-by-Row Alignment vs. Set Overlap

Distinguish exact same-row positional matches, case-sensitive row matches, and unordered cross-column membership counts while preventing empty padding rows from inflating match totals.

Same-row positional equality vs anywhere-in-column membership

Asking "how many values match between Column A and Column B?" has two distinct spreadsheet meanings. In QA answer-key scoring or warehouse bin verification, a match counts only when Row k in Column A equals Row k in Column B (positional alignment). In vendor-master reconciliation, a match counts whenever an ID in Column A appears anywhere in Column B regardless of row order (set membership).

In both cases, blank padding rows are a classic trap: "" = "" evaluates to TRUE on empty rows, inflating positional accuracy if unguarded. Guarding row checks with IF(ISBLANK(A2), 0, ...) excludes unpopulated rows cleanly.

Comparison ModeRow-Level Helper FormulaCase SensitivityBlank-Row Safe?
Positional (Row k = Row k)IF(ISBLANK(A2), 0, --(A2 = B2))Case-insensitiveYes
Positional Case-SensitiveIF(ISBLANK(A2), 0, --EXACT(A2, B2))Case-sensitiveYes
Set Membership (A exists in B)IF(ISBLANK(A2), 0, --(COUNTIF($B$2:$B$7, A2) > 0))Case-insensitiveYes

Row-by-Row Positional Match Flag & Total

Test A2 = B2 per row behind an ISBLANK(A2) guard (or directly via SUMPRODUCT((A2:A7 <> "") * (A2:A7 = B2:B7))) so double-blank rows return 0.

=SUMPRODUCT((A2:A7 <> "") * (A2:A7 = B2:B7))

Unordered Cross-Column Membership Flag & Total

Mark each populated entry in Column A with 1 when COUNTIF($B$2:$B$7, A2) > 0 and sum across the column so shifted rows still count as present.

=IF(ISBLANK(A2), 0, --(COUNTIF($B$2:$B$7, A2) > 0))
