Cherenkov Radiation Cone Angle (theta_C) & Relativistic Threshold Kinetic Energy

Calculate the Cherenkov light-cone half-angle theta_C = DEGREES(ACOS(1 / (n * beta))) and minimum relativistic particle kinetic energy KE_min = m0_c2 * ((1 / SQRT(1 - 1 / n^2)) - 1) in water, ice, and glass.

Decode the eerie blue reactor glow and neutrino rings in Super-Kamiokande!

Nothing outruns c in vacuum—but inside pure cooling water (refractive index n = 1.333), light slows down to phase velocity c / n = 0.7502c! When a fission beta electron or cosmic-ray muon zips through water faster than 0.7502c (n * beta > 1, where beta = v / c), it outruns its own electromagnetic field and sheds a coherent optical shockwave cone—Cherenkov radiation (1958 Physics Nobel Prize to Cherenkov, Frank, and Tamm)!

Huygens wavefront geometry gives the Cherenkov cone half-angle cos(theta_C) = 1 / (n * beta), while special relativity sets the minimum particle kinetic energy needed to reach beta_min = 1 / n: KE_min = m0*c^2 * (gamma_min - 1) = m0*c^2 * ((1 / SQRT(1 - (1 / n^2))) - 1)! For an electron (rest mass m0*c^2 = 0.511 MeV) in water (n = 1.333), Cherenkov emission switches on above KE_min = 0.2618 MeV, opening to theta_C = 33.54° at beta = 0.900 and reaching 41.33° at beta = 0.999 (just shy of the 41.39° ultra-relativistic asymptote)!

Cherenkov Cone Half-Angle theta_C = ACOS(1 / (n * beta)) in Degrees

Checks refractive index n > 1, relativistic 0 < beta < 1, and superluminal medium condition n * beta > 1 before calling ACOS.

Relativistic Threshold Kinetic Energy KE_min (MeV)

Computes rest energy B4 (MeV) multiplied by ((1 / SQRT(1 - 1 / n^2)) - 1).
