CHA2DS2-VASc score arithmetic with validated flags and age bands
Practice weighted binary flags and mutually exclusive age bands using a fictional CHA2DS2-VASc example; distinguish it from the newer ESC CHA2DS2-VA approach.
Weighted-score arithmetic, not a prescribing tool
Use fictional data to learn nested IF and weighted flags. This exercise cannot determine clinical eligibility, diagnose atrial fibrillation or recommend medication. Each clinical flag is assumed to have been assessed separately; do not infer it from a symptom or a single lab result.
CHA2DS2-VASc assigns one point to heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease and its female sex category; prior stroke/TIA/thromboembolism contributes two. Age 65–74 contributes one, while age 75 or above contributes two, never three. The total spans 0–9.
Versions matter: the 2024 ESC guideline uses CHA2DS2-VA without the sex-category point and updates clinical definitions. This older VASc arithmetic example is not a current ESC treatment algorithm. Consult the appropriate guideline rather than translating this total directly into a prescription.
Calculate the VASc total
Enter whole adult age in B4, numeric 0/1 flags in B2, B3, B5:B7, and the score-specific M/F category in B8. An unrecognised or empty category returns Invalid inputs rather than silently receiving zero points. The category is a historical scoring input, not a general representation of gender.
=IF(AND(B8<>"M",B8<>"F"),"Invalid inputs",IF(COUNT(B2:B7)<>6,"Invalid inputs",IF(OR(B4<18,B4<>INT(B4),AND(B2<>0,B2<>1),AND(B3<>0,B3<>1),AND(B5<>0,B5<>1),AND(B6<>0,B6<>1),AND(B7<>0,B7<>1)),"Invalid inputs",B2+B3+IF(B4>=75,2,IF(B4>=65,1,0))+B5+2*B6+B7+IF(B8="F",1,0))))Inspect the age contribution independently
The outer condition handles age 75 first. The second branch runs only for younger adults, so the two age bands cannot be counted together.
=IF(COUNT(B2:B7)<>6,"Invalid inputs",IF(OR(B4<18,B4<>INT(B4),AND(B2<>0,B2<>1),AND(B3<>0,B3<>1),AND(B5<>0,B5<>1),AND(B6<>0,B6<>1),AND(B7<>0,B7<>1)),"Invalid inputs",IF(B4>=75,2,IF(B4>=65,1,0))))Try the example
