Check Baggage Dimensions: Inches to Centimeters and Configurable Limits
Build a spreadsheet dimension check using configurable per-axis and total limits. Convert inches to centimeters and compare unrounded totals without claiming airline approval.
Use the limits for your actual booking
Baggage allowances vary by airline, cabin class and aircraft type. The limits here—22 by 14 by 9 inches and a 115 cm total—are hypothetical practice inputs, not a universal IATA rule. Verify whether your booking specifies individual dimensions, a linear sum, or other restrictions before configuring a check.
Measure the external bag including protrusions such as handles and wheels. Match each measurement to its corresponding permitted axis; this formula does not rotate the bag or model a physical sizer. It checks only the entered dimensions, not weight, item count, contents or carrier acceptance.
One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters. However, 45 inches is 114.3 cm, not exactly 115 cm. Do not substitute a rounded unit equivalent for the actual limit.
Display the linear total in centimeters
B2:B4 contain the three measurements in inches. This display rounds the sum to one decimal place; it does not make the underlying measurements exact.
=IF(COUNT(B2:B4)<>3,"Enter numeric dimensions",IF(MIN(B2:B4)<=0,"Enter positive dimensions",ROUND(SUM(B2:B4)*2.54,1)))Check each dimension and the unrounded total
C2:C4 contain the corresponding maximum dimensions in inches; B5 contains the maximum linear sum in centimeters. All inputs must be numeric and positive. This combined example assumes you intentionally want both kinds of constraint.
The comparison uses the unrounded centimeter sum, so a displayed total rounded down to a limit cannot incorrectly pass. A result within the configured dimensions is a spreadsheet result, not permission to bring the bag onboard.
=IF(OR(COUNT(B2:B5)<>4,COUNT(C2:C4)<>3),"Enter numeric dimensions and limits",IF(OR(MIN(B2:B5)<=0,MIN(C2:C4)<=0),"Enter positive dimensions and limits",IF(AND(B2<=C2,B3<=C3,B4<=C4,SUM(B2:B4)*2.54<=B5),"Within configured dimensions","Exceeds configured dimensions")))Try the example
