Date & Time
Calculate retirement, benefit eligibility, and equity cliff dates (EDATE & EOMONTH)
Calculate illustrative age milestones and month-based waiting dates with explicit calendar conventions.
Three classic HR milestone rules solved cleanly with EDATE and EOMONTH
1. Exact Age Milestone (Retirement at 65 or 67): EDATE(Birthdate, TargetYears * 12) adds exact calendar years while clamping Feb 29 leap-day births safely to Feb 28 in non-leap years.
2. "1st of the Month Following N Months or Days" (Health Insurance Eligibility): EOMONTH(HireDate, WaitMonths) + 1 rolls to the 1st of the month after N service months, while EOMONTH(HireDate + 60, 0) + 1 rolls to the 1st of the month after completing a 60-day waiting period (or EOMONTH(HireDate + 60 - 1, 0) + 1 if landing on the 1st itself already qualifies).
| HR Rule | Input Date | Formula | Milestone Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Age 65 Retirement | DOB 1964-08-15 | =EDATE(DOB, 65*12) | 2029-08-15 |
| 1-Year Equity Cliff | Hire 2025-03-10 | =EDATE(Hire, 12) | 2026-03-10 |
| 1st of Month After 2 Mos | Hire 2026-03-10 | =EOMONTH(Hire, 2) + 1 | 2026-06-01 |
Target retirement year and benefit-start formulas
Multiply retirement age in years (B2) by 12 months inside EDATE(A2, B2 * 12).
=TEXT(EDATE(A2,B2*12),"yyyy-mm-dd")First of the month following N calendar months of service
EOMONTH(HireDate, Months) lands on the last day of that Nth month; + 1 steps onto the 1st of the following month.
=TEXT(EOMONTH(C2,2)+1,"yyyy-mm-dd")Inputs and interpretation
These are illustrative calendar rules, not legal retirement or benefits eligibility. Use the actual plan terms, counting convention and leap-day policy. EDATE clamps Feb 29 to Feb 28; that may not match the applicable anniversary rule. Waiting periods in months differ from a fixed number of days.
