Bell-Delaware Method Formula: Shell-Side Heat Transfer Coefficient (Jc, Jl, Jb, Js, Jr)

Correct ideal crossflow tube-bank heat transfer h_id for real TEMA shell-and-tube baffle geometry, leakage, bundle bypass, unequal spacing, and laminar gradients via h_s = h_id * Jc * Jl * Jb * Js * Jr.

Why real baffled shell-and-tube exchangers achieve only ~60% of ideal crossflow heat transfer!

In an ideal crossflow tube bank, 100% of shell fluid flows perpendicularly across every tube row (h_id). In a real TEMA baffled shell-and-tube exchanger, Tinker (1951) and Kenneth J. Bell (1963, University of Delaware Cooperative Research Program) showed that fluid leaks through tube-to-baffle and baffle-to-shell clearances and bypasses around the outer tube limit (OTL)!

The Bell-Delaware method multiplies ideal crossflow h_id by five mechanistic factors: Jc (baffle cut/window fraction, ~0.95–1.10), Jl (tube-to-baffle + shell-to-baffle A+E leakage streams, typically 0.70–0.85), Jb (bundle-to-shell C-stream bypass, 0.75–0.90 without sealing strips vs. ~0.96 with sealing strips), Js (larger inlet/outlet baffle spacing, 0.90–1.00), and Jr (adverse laminar temperature-gradient factor for Re_s < 100, equal to 1.00 in turbulent flow)! For h_id = 1,850 W/(m^2*K) with Jc=1.04, Jl=0.76, Jb=0.88, Js=0.96, Jr=1.00, combined J_tot = 0.6677 and h_s = 1,235.3 W/(m^2*K)—jumping to 1,347.6 W/(m^2*K) when sealing strips boost Jb to 0.96!

Bell-Delaware Corrected Shell-Side Coefficient h_s = h_id * Jc * Jl * Jb * Js * Jr

Multiplies ideal crossflow coefficient h_id (B2) by the five Delaware geometry/leakage factors (B3:B7).

Combined Delaware Shell-Side Efficiency Multiplier J_total

Computes the overall dimensionless correction ratio h_s / h_id = Jc * Jl * Jb * Js * Jr.
